You look forward to getting away in your caravan and even if it is just a short weekend break there are a number of pre-journey checks that need to be made for a safe trip and peace of mind. It just takes a short while so why not make it part of your regular routine each time before setting off.
Check that all windows are securely fasten shut. Close all internal doors or fasten back. Close all cupboard doors making sure that there are no heavy objects just inside ready to push their way out at the first corner. Lock the fridge/freezer door and check that it is switched to 12V. Make sure that the aerial is down. Close all roof windows. Ensure that there are no objects in the bathroom, shower or kitchen area that would fall during the journey. (Shampoo, washing up liquid etc. makes a terrible mess when sprayed around!!) Switch off the water pump and close all taps and make sure that the waste tank is empty and you only carry the fresh water you will need so you are not carrying extra weight. Close and lock the door.
Make sure that the gas cylinders are switched off. Raise the corner steadies. Walk around the caravan and just give a quick check of the tyres and that the tyre pressure is correct, also that the wheel clamps have been removed (don’t presume your partner has done it!) and check the wheel nuts are tight. Once the caravan is on the car ensure that the jockey wheel is raised and locked in position and the breakaway cable is attached and the handbrake is off. Check the noseweight that you are not overweight.
Test the external lights around the caravan and the car when hooked up. If you have a tracker fitted to the caravan then make sure it is switched off for the journey. Get everyone in the car, lock the house and set off, and don’t forget one very important thing – ENJOY YOURSELF!! Have fun.
