This page is dedicated to camping recipes, not just for those in tents or out for the week-end, but these are also perfect for motorhome and caravan owners who don’t want to be eating out all the time whilst away or else living on sandwiches. It is nice to eat out and have someone else do the dishes, of course we all like that, but everyday it gets a bit boring and most of all a bit expensive! With all the other costs associated with travelling nowadays it is nice to save a bit of money so that we can prolong our holiday. There are also other benefits to cooking yourself the main one being you know what you are eating, you know what you are putting into the pan and that it is all fresh, nutritious and delicious.
Don’t look at cooking as a chore, treat it as fun, experiment, especially when you are away, explore local markets and try the local food. Markets usually mean fresh produce, full of flavour and you see what you are getting and you only buy the amount you need, not a carton, half of which will end up in the bin!
The recipes we will include below give you ideas, play around with them and place your own slant on them. Add your own ingredients and cook them how you like them. Recipes are not gospels written in stone they should only be ideas. While you are away is the ideal chance to experiment. Before you leave home it is a good idea to plan ahead and think about what you will need to take with you, what space you have to carry equipment in, the weight of pans etc,how many people will you be cooking for?, what will you be cooking on – this will often dictate what equipment you need, do you have an oven?, do you have a fridge?, Lets address this first. If you are camping in a tent then you will probably have a gas cooker with either one or two rings, which is ample to prepare a great meal. Caravaners and motorhomers will also have gas rings and often an oven and grill too, luxury all the benefits of home from home.
We only need to carry the basics with us as space is always premium, no matter how big your motorhome is. First thing of importance is a good kettle (not electric), and always keep this handy you never know when you will feel the need of a cup of tea or coffee. It is also a good idea to invest in a whistling kettle so if you do forget it will soon remind you that it is boiling. Next pans, it is a good idea to get a set of steamer pans with one large base pan and two smaller steamers on top, not only will they save space and allow you to cook a variety of foods on one ring, but they also sit inside each other and so save space. You will also need a frying pan for quick meals try and get one with a lid as this makes it more versatile. A flat griddle pan is also good if you can fit one in and will give you a wide range of uses. Next it is good to have two or even three bowls, try to get ones with lids so that they can double up as storage, also get them in different sizes so that they will fit inside one another. These bowls can be used for mixing, marinating, storing and serving, very versatile.
Tools:– Tongs are a must to save your fingers from harm, a small whisk, a good, sharp knife, a large serving spoon, a tin opener (an absolute must!), a wooden spoon and last, but definitely not least, a corkscrew.
