Ten Day Trip to Europe, Day 3

Day 3

Waking up early following a good night’s sleep and peeking outside a misty winter’s day greets me. The sun is unable to break through the clouds yet. I need coffee to wake properly and the aroma of the fresh coffee even rouses my sleeping husband. The drive along the wine-road from Neustadt takes us past Maikammer, Diedesfeld, Sankt Martin and Edenkoben, the tops of the nearby hills peeking out over the mists below. The vines are all bare now and most have been trimmed ready for winter.

We arrive in the town of Landau in der Pfalz and park up. The town has received quite a make-over in recent years and many of the old stone buildings have been sand-blasted and look pristine. A short walk brings us out in the square in the centre of the Town where the Christmas market is held. Although the square is not terribly large there are loads of very festive chalets packed into the place, the best dressed chalets I have seen in fact. There are two tents with indoor stalls where crafts people display their wares and their skills. The goodies displayed in the food chalets are just too tempting and we just have to sample a variety, its part of the fun after all, any thoughts of dieting are to be shelved till the New Year. We set off for the Black Forest a little later than planned, but we are in no hurry, just here to enjoy and unwind

Taking the Autobahn from Landau as it is now quite dark, we head towards Karlsruhe expecting heavy traffic as rush hour is underway but we pass by without any problems. Debating whether to go through Baden Baden or the next turn off we decide on the later and take the quieter roads up through the small villages towards the Schwartzwaldhochstrasse, a bit of a mouthful! ( Black Forest High Road). There is a lovely motorhome parking spot at Baiersbron we like but we decide to to Freudenstadt to see if the Christmas market has started here. The mists are heavy as we pass through the clouds on our way up to the high road but at the top is clear. Sadly the market doesn’t start for 2 more days but we enjoy a walk around the Town admiring the Christmas decorations and lights before heading back to the motorhome and bed.
