Celebrating Valentines Day

Valentines Day

There is not much that is known about St Valentine even though his name is famous around the world as the saint of love and lovers. The legend surrounding St Valentine is that he was a priest in the reign of Emperor Claudias. Claudias wanted to build up a strong army and believed that unmarried soldiers fought better than married men who missed their wives and children, so he decreed that marriage was to be made illegal. St Valentine, who disagreed with this order, carried on in secret marrying young couples. He was discovered, arrested and sentenced to death. Whilst awaiting his execution he received visits from his jailer’s daughter who was blind. St Valentine prayed daily with the young girl so that her sight might be restored, which it was. He was beheaded on the 14 February 269 AD on the Via Flaminia north of Rome. It is said that he left a note for the young girl saying simply “from your Valentine”.
